Stafford Scores First Sportsman Win in Last Lap Pass!
Stafford Scores First Sportsman Win in Last Lap Pass!
Crisp Motorsports Park PR
August 5th, 2017
With weather forecasters’ advertising a weekend washout, that was not the case at Crisp Motorsports Park, home of Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, Ga on August 5th. While the inaccurate forecast kept some competitors and fans away, those in attendance some of the best races of the season with some last lap passes that had fans on their feet for the finish.
Kicking off the night were Economy, Stock Appearing and Modified karts in their combined feature which had Macon’s Chuck Pittman picking up his third Economy win in a row and fifth of the second. Finishing second was Stock Appearing driver Freeman Burch of Chauncey, Modified driver CR Brackett of Warner Robbins placing third while Stock Appearing driver Josh Helms of Chauncey finishing fourth and Frank Lancaster of McDonough completing the top five.
The Sportsman division rolled onto the speedway next and while only four cars made up the field the competition did not disappoint. Pinehurst’s Tyler Rainey battled his dad Scott of Cordele in the early stages before Tyler distanced himself from Scott mid race. As the laps clicked by, Cobb’s Dusty Stafford passed the elder Rainey for second and started reeling in Tyler who had over strait-a-way lead with 5 laps to go. As the field approached the final lap, Tyler and Dusty were side down the back stretch with Dusty making the pass in turn four to pick up the win, his first in the Sportsman division with Tyler in second, Scott in third and Nickey Pate of Phenix City, Al finishing in fourth.
Pure Stock was up next and just like the Sportsman division, it also came down to a last lap pass for the win. Coming off a win two weeks ago, Dennis McDaniel led the field to green but Warwick’s Craig Shiver let it be down he wasn’t going to give up without a fight to the finish. With nearly eight laps side by side racing for the lead it was the final entry into turns three and four that decided the winner. McDaniel led Shiver into turn three on the final lap with Shiver to his inside but as McDaniel wiggled just a bit that was all Shiver needed to get buy and score the win with McDaniel finishing second. Completing the top five were Byron’s David Jones in third, Tommy Skinner of Leesburg in fourth and Scott Yaughn of Byron finishing fifth.
In Mini Stock, Vienna’s Banks Perdue returned to victory lane as Cordele’s Danny White finishing second.
With a bounty issued for Lake City, FL’s David Hodges Jr who had won three in a row, the question on everyone’s mind was if the streak would continue or come to an end. As the green flag fell, it was proven quickly that Cordele’s Billy Nipper had different plans as he led the field to green and never looked back. Nipper went on to score the win with Hodges in second, Tallahassee’s Stuart Dutton in third, Barnesville’s Stewart Smith in fourth and Cordele’s Lance Sparling finishing fifth.
Finishing off the night was Enduro which Had Pinehurst’ss Tyler Rainey scoring his third win of the season. Coming home in second was Leesburg’s Carlton Israel, Dusty Stafford of Cobb in third, Justin Butterworth of Vienna finishing in fourth and Jay Sorrow of Centerville rounding out the top five.
The next event at Crisp Motorsports Park will be August 19th featuring Pro Latemodels in the 3rd Pro Latemodel Showdown of the season with $2,000 on the line in a 50 lap shootout. Also in action will be Legends and Bandoleros from Atlanta Motor Speedway plus all local divisions. Stay tuned for more info on our next race and as always, we’ll see you at the races.
